My definition of a “painting” is rather narrow. Paint and an application surface (canvas/panel) fall into my definition. From that perspective, my Freed paintings are innovative and, dare I say, groundbreaking. When you start adding objects/collage, you enter into a grey area, in my opinion. Works by artists like Rauschenberg or Akunyili Crosby reside in that grey area. I define work by artists like Eric Mack, Ashley Bickerton, Steve Parrino and Ko Kirk Yamakira as “wall mounted objects”, not “paintings”. My observation is that the “Art Community” includes these kinds of work in the definition of “painting”. If that is the case, then my work is just another interesting contribution to a sea of interesting artistic objects. Perspective is everything. . .
