The Clairvoyant Series is comprised of twenty works that redefines how painting can exist in space. Three important elements – title, transparency and color density – work together resulting in each painting having its own distinct visual and conceptual presence.
1) Titles as Active Components I believe the title of each painting infuses that painting with a resonant identity. I think the use of transparency and color density generates unique material agency that energizes each painting’s title creating a circuit where material and title complement one another in a transformative way.
2) Transparency as Form Transparency is central to the series’ innovation. Never had I seen a painting like Oneiromancy (A) until I completed it in August 2019. A painting with three-dimensional form, but no color. Psychic (B), completed in March 2021 took transparency further with a form that looks more like a web than a painting. These works have no traditional precedent; their closest analogy might be icicles suspended in air. They must be seen in person to be fully understood.

3) Color Density as Spatial Experience Painters routinely vary the density of color in their paintings, but it is difficult to appreciate for two reasons: a) The first reason is simple, it is so widely used, we, as viewers, overlook it. b) Applying paint to a substrate (canvas, panel, etc) reduces the impact of color density variety dramatically. The FREED Painting process doesn’t just liberate paint from the Traditional two-dimensional application surface, it also liberates color. Oracle (C), completed in June 2020 is a three-dimensional study of a group of colors where there is density variation within each color of the group. The strands hang freely, each strand possessing its own visual personality. Seer (D), completed in April 2021 layers red, orange, green, yellow, purple and, violet in densities that allow viewers to see through the color, creating an effect reminiscent of stained glass or an autumn canopy. The ability to see through color up close in three-dimensions offers a visual intimacy impossible in Traditional painting.

The Clairvoyant Series marks a departure from any recognizable lineage. These works establish their own path – one defined by material freedom, spatial presence, and conceptual clarity. They represent a new direction in painting, one that invites viewers to engage with color, form and meaning in an intimate way only possible through the FREED Painting process.
